Kenneth Pakenham PhD

Kenneth Pakenham, PhD, is a Professor of clinical and health psychology in the School of Psychology at The University of Queensland, Australia. His research and clinical practice in psychology span almost 40 years. Drawing on his personal experience of adversity and his observations of others facing hardships, he has committed much of his career to investigating resilience. 

Research. His research integrates positive psychology and a popular psychotherapy that uses mindfulness, acceptance and values-based methods called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This research has informed government policies, and has established resilience building interventions and assessment protocols, which are used internationally. Through his 160 publications, 7000 citations of his work, 80 conference presentations, 3 research awards, and more than 3 million dollars of competitive grant funding, he has become a leader on resilience in adversity. 

Clinical practice. Dr Pakenham has worked as a clinician in a range of settings including hospitals, community organisations and private practice. He has worked with people who have psychiatric disorders, intellectual disabilities and physical illnesses. Positive psychology and ACT inform his clinical work. He is committed to building psychological prosperity in his clients. 

Training. He teaches university courses in positive psychology and psychotherapy. He developed the first ACT university course in Australia. His teaching approach has been widely published and has been recognised through 3 teaching awards. He has conducted psychotherapy training workshops and masterclasses in North America, Europe and Asia. He is committed to fostering not only skills and knowledge in his trainees but also reflective learning, self-awareness, self-care, emotional intelligence and psychological flexibility.
